Is it Safe to Use an Expired Fire Extinguisher?
It is crucial to refrain from using an expired fire extinguisher, as its functionality may be compromised during an emergency. A well-maintained fire extinguisher typically has a lifespan of approximately 10 to 12 years. According to the standards set forth by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), disposable fire extinguishers must be replaced at least every 12 years, as they are prone to losing pressure over time. Rechargeable fire extinguishers may have a longer operational lifespan, provided they successfully pass integrity testing on the shell.
Evidence it’s time to replace your fire extinguisher:
If your fire extinguisher shows visible defects, it should be replaced. Other indications that it may not function properly include:
Broken seal.
Signs of weakening and damage.
Shaky, weak, or broken handle.
Cracked, split, or damaged hose.
Fire Extinguisher Disposal
If your fire extinguisher is fully charged, please contact your local fire department to inquire whether they accept expired fire extinguishers. If they are unable to accept them, it is advisable to transport the extinguishers to a hazardous waste disposal facility.
If your fire extinguisher is empty, squeeze the handle to release any remaining pressure. Additionally, remove the head of the extinguisher to indicate that the canister is indeed empty. Most recycling facilities should accept the empty steel shell for recycling.
Always refer to local guidelines and disposal recommendations for more information on what to do with an expired fire extinguisher.
